The original version was translated by vgperson but more recently, the game was given a spruced-up rerelease on both Steam and Playism, and this was my introduction to this charming little slice of horror RPG-lite action.

The other two famous ones from this year- Ib by kouri and The Witch's House by Fummy- were made in RPG Maker 2000 and RPG Maker VX respectively, but Mad Father, created by Sen and distributed by the circle Miscreant's Room, instead was made with WOLF RPG Editor, a free alternative to RPG Maker that's sadly limited to Windows. Mad Father is one of a handful of Japanese freeware horror games created in 2012 via the use of various RPG-making tools that probably weren't designed with horror in mind. One lucky enough to get a 2016 remake and release on Steam, no less. Time for another RPG-style game that's actually a horror game! (We'll get on to reviewing the 2020 remake at some point in the future.) BUT NO SUPER-SCARY PICTURES.Īlso, THIS IS BASED ON THE 2016 VERSION OF THE GAME, WHICH NO LONGER EXISTS SUPER-MINOR NOT-REALLY-SPOILER SPOILERS AHEAD. Please remember to cut this from the final page, we don't want to make asses of ourselves.Īlso, in case you somehow skipped our warning. Something about listening to our tips on getting the game to work too, I guess. May as well put the warning down there anyway, it's just copied over from the Corpse Party page, whatever. Are we doing a spoiler warning for this one too? I can't remember. Probably something about how we took the screenshots too (via the Steam interface in windowed mode to preserve the correct aspect ratio). Probably something about the version of the game we played (the Steam 2016 version, although we cover the original freeware version from 2012 later on). Not the easiest task in the world, but this kind of 'housekeeping' is the only time I, the great and powerful Ed the Editor, get to shine on this dumphole. This is just a placeholder warning until I think of something clever to say here. Mad Father - Doesn't your father always tell you not to go into the basement?
